Individual Spiritual Direction
“The goal of spiritual direction is spiritual formation - the ever-increasing capacity to live a spiritual life from the heart … It is by being awake to God in us that we can increasingly see God in the world around us.” - Henri Nouwen
A “Normal” Direction Session
There is no such thing as a “normal” Spiritual Direction session; each one is unique to the individual. That being said, there are a few "staples" to a session.
In each Spiritual Direction session, there are three participants: the director, the directee, and God. The director and directee come together to explore the directee’s life and to notice where God is present. God’s presence can be found in the mundane and the profound—in changing diapers, eating a meal, washing dishes, having a disagreement with a co-worker, during a stressful day, and in times of prayer.
The goal of Spiritual Direction is to notice where God is present in your life and to respond to His invitation. Sessions typically last around 45-50 minutes and can be held in person, via Zoom, or FaceTime.
Who is Spiritual Direction for?
In short, anyone can benefit from spiritual direction. It is valuable for pastors, stay-at-home moms, college students, retirees, and even high school students. The main criterion is simply a desire to grow spiritually.
How much does Spiritual Direction cost?
I charge $80 per session ($45 for students). Between administrative tasks, prayer, driving, and preparation, I typically spend about 2 hours on each hour-long session.
If $80 (or $45) is cost-prohibitive for you, please schedule a free consultation, and we can discuss a rate that works for you. I care more about you and the work of the Spirit than about the money.
In some cases, directees choose to pay more per session as a gift to others. These gifts allow me to offer discounted rates for students, those with illnesses, or individuals who cannot afford $80 per session.
For everyone, the first session is a free consultation. This allows me to better understand what you are hoping for from our sessions together.
Where can we meet for Direction?
Online: I meet with directees using FaceTime or Zoom.
San Diego County: I have an office in Escondido for in-person sessions or can do house calls for those unable to commute.
LA County: I have an office at Biola University in the ISF offices, located in the center of campus at the Mashburn offices.
How Often is Spiritual Direction?
Generally, I meet with directees once a month. Those who meet monthly are often seeking to deepen their self-awareness, notice God's presence in their life, and develop a more meaningful spiritual life.
In more urgent cases, I may meet with a directee twice a month or even weekly. Urgent cases typically involve loss, grief, depression, or the need to make a pressing decision.
In our initial consultation, we will discuss how often you would like to meet.
