Individual Spiritual Direction

“The goal of spiritual direction is spiritual formation - the ever-increasing capacity to live a spiritual life from the heart … It is by being awake to God in us that we can increasingly see God in the world around us.” - Henri Nouwen

A “Normal” Direction Session

There is no such thing as a “normal” direction session; each direction session is unique to the individual. That being said, there are a few “staples” to a Spiritual Direction session.

In each direction session there are three participants; the director, the directee, and God. The director and directee come together for the purpose of exploring the directee’s life and noticing where God is present. God can be present in the changing of diapers, eating a meal, washing of dishes, a disagreement with a co-worker, during a stressful day, and in times of prayer.

The goal of direction is to notice where God is present in your life and to respond to His invitation. Sessions will last around 45-50 minutes and are held in-person, via zoom, or facetime.

Who is Spiritual Direction for?

In short, anyone can benefit from spiritual direction. It is beneficial for pastors, stay-at-home moms, college students, retirees, and even high school students. The main criterion is a desire to grow spiritually.

I have a history of working with teenagers who want to deepen their relationship with God. In my work at my church, it is clear that God has given me the gift of being able to relate to youth. In many ways, I am a kid who never fully grew up.

I also have a history of working with college students, pastors, and lay leaders in the church.

When meeting with minors, parental permission is required, as well as affirmation from the minor that they want to work with a spiritual director.

How much does Spiritual Direction cost?

I charge $90 for a session ($45 for students). Between administrative tasks, prayer, driving, and preparation, I spend about 2 hours on each hour-long session.

If $90 ($45) is cost-prohibitive for you, please schedule a free consultation and we can talk about how much you can pay. I care more about you and the work of the Spirit than money.

In some cases, some directees opt to pay more per session as a gift to others. These "gifts" allow me to offer discounted rates for students, those with illnesses, or those who cannot afford $45 per session.

For everyone, the first session is a free consultation so that I can better understand what you are hoping for from our sessions together.

Where can we meet for Direction?

Online: I meet with directees using FaceTime or Zoom.

San Diego County: In San Diego, I have an office in Escondido.

LA County: In Los Angeles County, I meet with members of the Biola community at the ISF offices.

How Often is Spiritual Direction?

Generally, I meet with directees once a month. Those who come once a month are often looking to increase their knowledge about themselves and to notice God's presence in their life. They may also be interested in developing a deeper and more meaningful spiritual life.

In more urgent cases, I may meet with a directee twice a month or even every week. Urgent cases usually involve a loss, grief, depression, or an urgent decision that needs to be made.

In our initial consultation meeting, we will discuss how often you would like to meet.
